Definition
Thermal Management refers to the use of one or a combination of various materials to transmit heat away from the components or operating area of a PCB to less critical areas, such as a metal heatsink / backing, aluminum core, metal core, copper or other metallic core, or heavy copper plane layer.

Applications
The need for thermal management seems to have started in military applications, but its use is becoming widespread in power and light emitting diode, or LED PCB applications.
